Seyed Mohammad Ali Aghamir Mohammad Ali (a.k.a. Ali Aghamir), along with his younger brother, Seyed Mohammad Aghamir Mohammad Ali (a.k.a. Mohammad Aghamir) co-founded Nobitex, Iran's largest cryptocurrency exchange.
Since founding Nobitex in 2018 it has grown to handle approximately 70% of Iran's crypto transactions and claims to have 11 million users.
It has been reported that Nobitex has processed between tens and hundreds of millions of dollars in transactions linked to sanctioned groups such as the IRGC and Iran's central bank. The company is used by regular citizens and blacklisted entities alike, making it difficult to identify nefarious activity and it advises its clients on how best to avoid their transactions being monitored or intercepted by Western governments.
Despite US sanctions, Nobitex claims that “It has never been an arm of the government and has never had any relationship, arrangement, agreement, or contract with the Central Bank of Iran, the IRGC, or any other governmental body”.
Further controversy arises when looking into Ali and Mohammad's family ties. The brothers are part of the elite Kharrazi family but have reportedly been using an alternative surname since their time at the Sharif University of Technology. The family has close ties to the Supreme Leader and has been one of the most influential families in the Islamic Republic for generations. Further to the political ties, the Kharrazi family are related to all three of the Supreme Leaders by marriage.
