Background

Nobitex is Iran's largest cryptocurrency exchange and was established in 2018. The platform claims to have over 11 million users and has processed tens of billions of USD, despite Iran's strictly sanctioned economy. Nobitex has become the go-to place for a broad user base to access services to enable liquidity, settlement, and movement of capital on the international market.

In recent years the company has been linked to other sanctioned entities including Iran's Central Bank and the IRGC. Two of Nobitex’s co-founders, Ali Aghamir and Mohammad Aghamir are part of the Kharrazi family who have close ties to the supreme leader and are considered one of the most influential families in the Islamic Republic. Despite the brothers using an alternative surname, Aghamir, their family has held key political, diplomatic and religious posts for the last three generations.

In June 2025 Nobitex was victim to a cyberattack that resulted in the loss of approximately $90 million. Responsibility for the attack was claimed by the hacker group Gonjeshke Darande, also known as Predatory Sparrow. The stolen crypto was transferred to vanity addresses with labels that made various political statements such as naming the IRGC as terrorists.

According to OFAC, Nobitex has transferred wealth out of the country to avoid sanctions, which has contributed to economic chaos for Iran's people. They are also accused of supporting the IRGC, helping to fund terrorist activity including ransomware actors. The OFAC press release stated "Nobitex has contributed to the repression of the Iranian people and reportedly enables the Iranian government to conduct warrantless surveillance of Iranian civilians at a time of mass government repression."
