Iran Air

Background

Iran Air is the flag carrier of Iran, it was founded in 1944 and nationalised in the 1960's. Iran Air is referred to as Homa, the name of a mythical Persian phoenix and the acronym of Iran National Airlines in Persian. The passenger fleet consists of a mixture of Airbus, ATR and Fokker aircraft.

The airline also has a cargo division, Iran Air Cargo, which currently operates the Boeing 747-200C/SF.

US Sanctions

Iran Air was sanctioned by the US in November 2018 under EO13599 for being owned or controlled by the Government of Iran. At this time, 67 aircraft owned by Iran Air were also sanctioned, a full list of these can be found at the bottom of the page.

European and UK Sanctions

Iran Air historically operated services to 72 destinations across Asia and Europe but following European Union (EU) sanctions in late 2024, the airline is now restricted from flying to destinations in the EU and United Kingdom (UK).

The EU stated that it imposed sanctions because Iran Air had transferred Iranian made Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and related technologies to Russia, which have been used in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. As part of these sanctions the EU stated that Iran Air is controlled by Iran's Ministry of Infrastructure.

The UK stated that Iran Air was being sanctioned in response of Iran's delivery of ballistic missiles to Russia.

Ukraine Sanctions

Ukraine also sanctioned Iran Air in 2024 for it's involvement in the supply of military equipment to Russia.

Impact of Sanctions

Reports suggest that these sanctions have made it difficult for Iran Air to purchase fuel and add new jets to its fleet. Analysis also suggests that it is challenging for the airline to aquire spare parts, raising concerns about safety standards.

Travellers are also impacted, relying instead on connecting flights from neighbouring countries to reach Europe and beyond.
